The Ireland: One Island, Two Nations program started May 31 with the group traveling to Dublin.
Students on this program will study across an island divided by a border, but joined in history. They start in Dublin, the capital of the Republic, and uncover the cultural significance behind Glendalough, Trinity College and places made famous by such writers as James Joyce and Jonathan Swift. Then they head to Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom), tracking the history of Ireland, ancient and modern, stopping at the magnificent coastal World Heritage Site, the Giant’s Causeway, and visiting locations associated more recently with the Troubles in Belfast and Derry. Then it’s off to the beauty of the mountains, valleys and islands of the West of Ireland where Gaelic and traditional music can still be heard.
The program is led by Scott Boyd (MTSU), who has successfully guided this program several times. Lisa Day (EKU) is teaching “Enchanted Women of Ireland”, and Bill Mullen (EKU) is teaching “Castles and Cliffsides: Literature of the Emerald Isle.”

Lisa’s class takes students to both city and country locations that provide cultural, literary, and artistic depictions of women in Irish society to gain a better understanding of how women in Ireland have made indelible contributions to Irish history while remaining marginalized.
Bill’s course enables students to gain an understanding of the rich historical and cultural background to Irish literature by experiencing the locales that have inspired Irish authors over the centuries, including ancient churches and castles, Ireland’s beautiful and mystic landscape, and the historic pubs where iconic music still flourishes.
We catch up with the group in their first day in Dublin where Lisa found herself in a bit of trouble under the Christchurch Cathedral. Not sure who that informer was, but the students look a bit suspicious.
Then off to a sheepdog farm visit – a traditional learning experience for students on the Ireland program. Irish wool is world-renown.
